Determining the limited side. Help the joint while stretching laterally into the limited side. Take care to make sure you sit into/stretch into the limited side THE SAME as how your body does the flexible side. Best physical therapy practice is to make sure that each area of your body has 100% of its own mobility and mechanics so as not to promote compensation from another region to provide what that area cannot do. Once that happens (which happens far eariler in life than we think), the compensatory cheats spread, worsen, and lock down; thus, chronic pain that we attribute to age.

When Manual Intervention is needed over just stretch/exercise.
Stretch and exercise is always beneficial. There is a point where it plateaus in its beneficial effects. If you notice you have to perform a certain regimen either before or after an activity in order to 'avoid injury', you have 2 choices.
